Blackwater Falls
Located in the Allegheny Mountains two miles southeast of Davis, Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose tannic acid-stained, amber colored water cascades 62 feet into the rugged Blackwater Canyon.

Blackwater Falls State Park protects 2,358 acres of red spruce, eastern hemlock, red maple and black cherry trees and offers 20 miles of hiking trails. There is wheelchair access to the beautiful Lindy Point Outlook that overlooks the Blackwater Canyon. Families will enjoy the park’s quiet setting, scenery and outdoor activities throughout the year.

Established in 1971 and located in the highest valley east of the Mississippi, Canaan Valley State Park is situated on 6,000 acres and contains the second-largest inland wetland area in the United States.

Established in 1971 and located in the highest valley east of the Mississippi, Canaan Valley State Park is situated on 6,000 acres and contains the second-largest inland wetland area in the United States. With a base elevation of 3,100 feet, it is no wonder that in 1950 members of the Washington Ski Club leased 60 acres and developed the first commercial ski area south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Canaan Valley skiing is now established as one of the area’s best winter attractions.
The park offers family oriented activities year round in a tranquil and scenic setting. Exceptional facilities for wedding receptions and group gatherings are available. Keep an eye on their website for special events.

White Grass Touring Center
In the late 70’s three friends, Chip Chase, Winslow Ayers and Tom Preston were skiing and chanced upon an abandoned ski lodge. They acquired the property and opened White Grass Ski Touring Center, an expansive Nordic style facility.

In the late 70’s three friends, Chip Chase, Winslow Ayers and Tom Preston were skiing and chanced upon an abandoned ski lodge. The lodge had been part of Weiss Knob, a ski area begun in 1959, but abandoned ten years later. They acquired the property and opened White Grass Ski Touring Center, an expansive Nordic style facility.
One of the coolest places you will ever experience, White Grass is an amazing assortment of all things winter. The original lodge building is filled with everything you’ll need to take on the challenges of cross country, skating, snowshoeing, telemarking or backcountry. The whole foods café serves up amazing homemade soups, sandwiches and desserts in a down-home atmosphere that is so laid back you’ll just have to experience it. We warn you that White Grass fever is contagious…you will go back!

Dolly Sods Wilderness Area
Now part of the Monongahela National Forest and on a ridge crest that forms part of the Eastern Continental Divide, it is the highest plateau of its type east of the Mississippi.
DOLLY SODS WILDERNESS AREA
Once covered with trees some of which measured 12 feet in diameter, Dolly Sods was completely logged between 1880 and 1920. Now part of the Monongahela National Forest and on a ridge crest that forms part of the Eastern Continental Divide, it is the highest plateau of its type east of the Mississippi. Dolly Sods consists of 32,000 acres that vary in elevation from 2,700 feet to 4,700 feet. Because of its high elevation, it is amazingly cool – the “Sods” climate is often compared to parts of Canada.
Congress established this wilderness area with the intent that it remain in its natural, wild state, and it surely has. Deep snows and strong winds paint a perfect playground for cross country skiers in the winter. In mid-summer, locals head to Dolly Sods to pick the blueberries and huckleberries that grow in abundance. In autumn, hunters head to the “Sods” in search of whitetail deer. There are lots of ways to get to the “Sods”. The easiest access is from a rental property located in “Old Timberline”. Be sure to ask us for details and directions.

Monongahela National Forest
Today the Monongahela National Forest’s federally owned land protects over 919,000 acres within a 1,700,000-acre proclamation boundary that includes much of the Potomac Highlands Region and portions of 10 counties.
MONONGAHELA NATIONAL FOREST
Prompted by the devastation created by massive cutting of Eastern forests, in 1911 the government passed the Weeks Act to ensure long-term watershed protection and natural resource management. In 1915, as a result of the Weeks Act, 7,200 acres were acquired to begin the forest, called the Monongahela Purchase. On April 28, 1920 it became the Monongahela National Forest and by the end of 1924 encompassed some 150,367 acres.
Today the Monongahela National Forest’s federally owned land protects over 919,000 acres within a 1,700,000-acre proclamation boundary that includes much of the Potomac Highlands Region and portions of 10 counties. Within the forest, elevations range from 900’ to 4,863′ with variations in terrain and precipitation that have created one of the most ecologically diverse National Forests in the country. Ninety percent of West Virginia’s trout waters are found within the forest, as are popular tourist attractions Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks. An estimated 1.3 million people visit the forest annually to enjoy the full breadth of outdoor activities.

Otter Creek Wilderness Area
Part of the Monongahela National Forest, Otter Creek Wilderness consists of 20,698 acres located in Tucker and Randolph counties. Elevations range from 1,800 to 3,900 feet with thick vegetation and a variety of wildlife.

By 1914 all the virgin forest in the Otter Creek watershed had been timbered and in 1917 the US Government acquired most of the Otter Creek area in order to protect the watershed. In 1975 Congress designated it as a wilderness area under the Eastern Wilderness Act. As recently as 2009 additional acres were purchased and added to the area.

– True back wood hiking. Deadfall trees are not cut out of the trails unless going around them will cause unacceptable environmental impacts. No bridges are provided at creek crossings. You should plan ahead with proper clothing, food, water, map and compass.

National Wildlife Refuge
In 1974 in recognition of the valley’s extensive wetlands, wildlife and habitats, Canaan Valley was declared a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. Today, this 500th National Wildlife Refuge has acquired 15,245 acres throughout Canaan Valley.
NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
In the 1950’s, biologists began discussing the possibility of protecting the wetlands in Canaan Valley. By the 60’s the US Fish and Wildlife Service determined that the area did not meet their criteria for protection. But in the 70’s the idea of a refuge emerged again. In 1974 in recognition of the valley’s extensive wetlands, wildlife and habitats, Canaan Valley was declared a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. On August 11, 1994 Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge was established with an initial purchase of the 86 acre Freeland Tract.
Today, this 500th National Wildlife Refuge has acquired 15,245 acres throughout Canaan Valley. Their mission to preserve the Valley’s extensive wetlands, wildlife and habitats is served by a number of full time US Fish and Wildlife employees and a vast number of community volunteers. The refuge maintains a close relationship with area schools and tourists to provide educational programs on wetlands, wildlife and nature management.

Downtown Davis, WV
Davis, known as the highest incorporated town in the state of West Virginia, has an elevation of 3,200 feet and an estimated population of 625. A mecca for bikers, hikers and boaters, it features unique restaurants and artsy shops.

HISTORY
The first resident of Davis, James Parsons arrived in 1884 and lived in a boxcar while he did his job working as a surveyor for US Senator Henry Gassaway Davis. The Senator purchased the land that is now Davis for $5 to $15 an acre. As Mr. Parsons surveyed he laid out the town, naming the three main streets Henry, Thomas and William, after the Senator and his two brothers. One of the first lumbering towns in the state, Davis incorporated in 1890 with 909 residents. By 1893 the town had electricity and by 1902 had prospered to a population of 3000 people and more than 80 businesses.

By 1892, coal was king in Thomas and Davis Coal and Coke soon had 9 producing mines and a thousand coke ovens within a mile of the town. Named after Senator Henry Gassaway Davis’s brother, Thomas was home to nearly 3000 people, many of them immigrants who flocked there to work in the mines and railroads. In 1901, nearly half of Thomas was destroyed by fire but was quickly rebuilt with fine hotels and an opera house. By 1921 coke production had stopped and mining would diminish in the 50’s.
