Great Place to Stay in West Virginia!

We stayed at Bear’s Lair for 3 nights in March 2024. Upon arriving, we were blown away at how cute and cozy the house was. There was plenty of space for 3 couples! The house was situated close to the main road, but there was minimal noise excluding the wildlife that frequented the yard. The house was situated close to enough to Davis and the state parks such that it was only a maximum of a 15 minute drive anywhere! Everything was lovely and clean. We definitely recommend staying here!

Bears lair

We have stayed here several times but each year it gets more run down. The roofing has TVEK pieces on it. The furniture needs to be updated. The ottoman is still really gross and putting a blanket on it doesn't make it better. I know these homes are hard to maintain but little things can go a long way. Hope the owners get a handle on the repairs.

Great Layout, Perfect Location

Couldn't ask for a better location to Timberline. The place had plenty of space, was great with two families and 5 kids. Pool table and hot tub was a hit. The property was a bit "tired", and unfortunately was a bit dirty when we arrived (really the kitchen/dining room - bathrooms and bedrooms were sparkling), but other than that was a great place and we'd likely return.

Thanksgiving GetAway

Our family - 3 adult couples and a baby loved staying in the Bear's Lair. It was spacious & clean. We loved the wood burning fireplace in the cozy LR & especially loved being so close to Dolly Sods for some great hikes. Highly recommend. . We would definintely go back!

Second time was not as charming or as warm.

The house overall was ok. Some of the issues we had was the furnace for the living room and kitchen broke down the 2nd night. The hot water tank for the main bedroom and upstairs bedroom only lasted long enough for 1 and 1/2 showers. The hot tub was just hot water, no jets. The house needs a little upkeep.

Had a great time. Rental was clean and well furnished. Owners need to finish outside roof repairs, but this does not impinge on inside stay. Hiked. Used hot tub. Visited nearby state parks. Lovely time

Secluded Hideaway

The property is very private even though it is towards the front of Old Timberline. This makes it very convenient to get in and out. The house could use some updates and some TLC. The owners appear to be slowly working on the property. The house was stocked with everything we needed. The management company was absolutely wonderful! They were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Would definitely recommend renting through Best of Canaan.

Amazing Location with a Caveat

We rent from Best of Canaan because of the community and access to Dolly Sods. The grandkids love fishing in the little lakes, the dog loves running around, and we all love the quick access to some of the best Dolly Sods hiking (high ground so no mud!). It’s a great place to chill and explore.
The big negative: the house was so dirty. The dishes in the cabinets were dirty, there was human hair literally on dishes and in pots. Hair stuck on the chairs and sofas that a quick vacuum would take care of. Mice droppings in the kitchen drawers. The kind of dust that shows neglect on wall hangings, furniture. So I’m torn. We LOVE the location and the basic vibe of the house, and I’m not a germaphobe—we had our dog and grandkids—we get messy too. But this was just neglect, which is frustrating to see given the house’s potential. The bathrooms were clean. I would recommend to a friend but be honest about the condition of the place.

Great Trip for a Group of a Friends!

Even without AC, this house was overall a great place to be. I love the layout of the house and how comfortable the furniture is. The place DOES smell like dog, especially some of the beds, so make sure to have air freshener and plenty of laundry detergent to try to wash out the smell! Also, the hot tub is small (fits 4 comfortably) so be mindful of that. Many of the outlets do not actually work when you try to plug in devices. Otherwise, this place was a perfect getaway and close to many cool sites like Blackwater Falls! Would definitely visit again. 🙂

Retreating at the Bear’s Lair

The secluded location was perfect. The house had plenty of room for all six of us. The jacuzzi was ready upon arrival. The younger members of the family made great use of the pool table. It was cool enough on a couple days to use the fireplace, with plenty of wood provided.
The house did not have air conditioning and several of the windows did not have screens. However, fans were provided so we were comfortable most days. Overall the house and property were clean. The biggest downfall were the stairs. I didn’t realize that the living room and main bedroom were sunken. There were only three steps to navigate, but it was difficult for someone with knee problems.
The roads were in great shape so it was easy to get to the attractions. There were many listings of places for entertainment and eating on the brochure. Unfortunately, probably due to Covid, several of the eateries listed were closed.
I would recommend this property as a great getaway. However, I would caution older folks about the stairs.
PS: I am adding additional comments as I go over the checklist.

Family Ski Trip

This was our second stay at Bear's Lair. The first being in 2010. The house needs some TLC but it's a cozy fun place. Well stocked with all the things a good mountain house needs. Hot tub needs replaced and as mentioned in an earlier comment, the beds are a bit firm so if you like a softer feel you'll need to pack accordingly.

Wonderful Christmas at Bear’s Lair!

9of us (7 adults and 2 young children) enjoyed a wonderful pre-Christmas ski week at Bear’s Lair. The house was perfect for our three-generation family — spacious public space, a dining table large enough to accommodate us, a big well-designed kitchen, bonus game room, and an almost perfect bedroom/bathroom arrangement (oldest single child had to adjoin room with nephews and share bathroom — not truly a hardship). Beautiful secluded location five minutes from Timberline ski lodge. The owners surprised us with a decorated Christmas tree. Along with a big fireplace that assured a festive holiday.

House was very clean. Other reviews have noted certain things that could use shoring up or even total renovation, and we experienced the same: pool table is beat, hot tub jets don’t work, faucet in mater bathroom sink bizarrely located, shower diverted in master bath only semi-functional, etc. none of it mattered because the snow on the mountain was great and we were gathered together in a beautiful space. Owner’s most recent entry I. Guestbook indicates they will begin renovations this spring so we expect all those nits to be fixed. Great property. Grateful for the chance to experience it.

Thanksgiving Vacay

When we arrived we found that the house was smaller than the pics depicted but that was ok, it was still spacious for 10 people. The house needed a good cleaning on the floors, windows, & showers, cobwebs and dust was everywhere. Water damage on ceilings, some inconsiderate guest threw their cigarette butts on the front porch, in the flower pot out front as well as the umbrella holder. In all nothing I couldn't clean on my own which I did. This has nothing to do with the home itself just the cleaning staff. Also seems they have new beds, they are extra firm and feel like you're sleeping on a concrete slab, after the first night we ran to Walmart got 3" memory foam Mattress Pads. It was just fine after that. We will def rent again and if need be clean it again to our expectations, it was a very nice place and worth the little bit we had to do.

Great space for a relaxed WV ski visit

We would definitely rent this property again. The 'great room' is such a nice space: big window views of the woods (with no visible neighbors); lovely stone fireplace; good seating for hanging out, playing games, and watching movies. The kitchen had a nice layout for cooking and hanging out and was decently equipped. Bedrooms were all a fine size (two very large, two normal). Bathrooms were nothing special but perfectly fine. We loved having the large mudroom to keep our ski equipment, boots etc. And the hot tub was such a nice perk. Of course, the proximity to Timberline and Canaan Valley skiing was great. The kids enjoyed the abundance of bears in the home (paintings, figurines, toy animals). There was a nice collection of stuff for kids (e.g., books, movies, games, puzzles). Also, we really appreciated having a free landline to use, as your Verizon cell phones were useless in the mountains. Any downsides? A few of us found the beds to be a bit uncomfortable, though this is a subjective thing. Also, there didn't seem to be a binder with info and recommendations about dining, groceries, recreation etc., which is something we've seen in a number of similar rentals. Finally, I'll note that the property may be best for folks who are not expecting perfection. The home was decently clean, but not immaculate. Some of the furnishings are a bit shabby. People who are relaxed and focused on having a good time won't care about this stuff, but those who like more of a luxe experience might be dissatisfied with these details.

Ski trip

Great location. Easy to go back and forth to ski resorts and also lots of places to take a hike. Well appointed kitchen. Had a lot of fun playing pool. While this is a beautiful home the living room furniture has lots of wear and needs updated. Ceiling issues apparent though no effect on our stay. This is a beautiful home that needs some care!

Great house that needs some TLC

My family hubby and 4 young adult children stayed for 4 nights. Great layout. We loved the family room with fantastic fireplace. Location was good for quick trips to town for groceries and close to hiking, Seneca Rock and Blackwater Falls. Major plus was Dolly Sods trailhead just a 3 min drive up the mountain. The house does need a bit of TLC. T
Pros
Private lot
Outdoor space-decks, good parking, hot tub,large lawn with fire pit andorandak chairs- did not use due to rain
Kitchen-Large kitchen/ dinning area, appliance in good working order. Large dinning table with plenty of seating.
Bedrooms-Large with plenty of closet, storage and linens.
Bathrooms- 2 private baths - one jack and jill great for my 3 girls to share. Plenty of bath linens.
Common space- Fantastic great room with large fireplace and lots of wood provided. Comfy couches and side chairs.
Entertainment/WiFi- lots games and books- pool table a plus
Cleanliness - basic cleaning

Cons
Outdoor space-Hot tub light and jets not working properly, Outdoor grill not fully working. Outside dinning lacking, Outside of home needs through cleaning. Aesthetic repairs needed.
Kitchen - Described at well equipped. Not the case. We were there during covid mitigation so ordered in and cooked. Kitchen utensil and cookware lacking. Kitchen cabinets and countertops have seen better days.
Kitchen floor laminate in disrepair. Sink facet needs replaced.
The counter bar stool are the way too high - can’t sit and eat.
Bedrooms-All mattresses seemed new but very very firm and difficult for all of us to sleep
Bathrooms -Shower faucets need replaced- little to no water pressure.
Common space - some furniture tore/excessively worn -needs replaced
Entertainment/ WiFi- Old TVs in bedrooms. VCRs only. Family room Tv okay but sound quality. WiFi slow. Do not rely on for downloading/streaming/ multiple devices
Cleanliness- deep cleaning needs

Much needed relaxing vacation

We had a great week at Bear's Lair-our 4th stay in this house. It was a very unusually hot week so all the fans in the house were very helpful but could use some new ones. The house could use some updating, but there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out and our dogs love it too. the beds are very firm but comfortable. And the hot tub was great when it cooled off in the evenings. We brought our kayaks and love how close this house is to the lake. We hiked at Blackwater and Canaan state parks as well as the Valley View trail at the top. And we were lucky enough to see the comet!

Bear's Lair

We had a wonderful time despite rain every day. The house is spacious and have a unique layout. There was space to be all together and space to be apart. The property has a very private spacious yard. When it wasn't raining we were able to use the yard for some outside games. The house could use some TLC/updating but was still comfortable. There was a great selection of glassware, plates, and bowls. Pots and pans could use some updating. We had an issue with the oven which was addressed right away. There were plenty of towels and extra pillows. One thing I didn't notice when booking was no air conditioning. There were a couple fans but it still got very hot. The rain helped to cool things down. All in all we had a great stay! Thanks for the getaway!

Great Living Space, house could use some updates immediately!!!

We loved the location and layout of this property. Near the entrance to Timberline yet set back far enough to not even notice the traffic. Large enough for six adults and four kids to feel not on top of each other. The great room with awesome fireplace was just right for hanging out. The secluded pool /TV room was great for the kids and adults, especially at night when trying to keep the noise level down. Hot tub and grill on back deck were great, and we had plenty of firewood. The down sides to this property while frustrating are not reasons not to stay. About $1,500 could really make a difference. All the fixtures are from the 80s including the plumbing ones which were poor at best. All the tub diverters were not working correctly, resulting in half of the hot water not going up to the shower head. The master sink faucet was for a small side bathroom, it was almost impossible to was your hands since it didn't stick out far enough from the basin wall. The electrical switches are also a mess and the place is a bit dim everywhere when needing brighter light. The thermostats need replacing; it was hard to manage the temperature in each room and the house collectively. The kitchen needs some review of its equipment. Having a two slice toaster was frustrating as was lack of rolling pin. Overall we would stay here agin. If I was the owner I would invest a little $$ to make this place 5 STAR all around!!!! Rental management is great and easy to work with, and we took advantage of stay 3 nights get 1 free night.

Back Again

We love coming to Bear's Lair because it has the right amount of bedrooms for our group and it's dog friendly. It also helps that the house has a cool layout inside: sunken living-room with a second floor floating walkway above it. We also like the pool table and hot tub 🙂

Beautiful Property, Beautiful Cabin

This cabin and property are beautiful and wonderfully kept. The couches and television in the main living area are updated from the pictures that are listed. The fireplace is gorgeous and large, so warm comfortable fires are a must(with well stocked wood provided!). The bedrooms are clean and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and dishes, as well as all appropriate appliances (stove/oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, blender, keurig, pancake griddle, plus). The fall colors in the trees around the property are wonderful and the quiet seclusion is perfect for a getaway. The hot tub is nice in the crisp fall air and the two grills make for even more options for cooking. I look forward to returning!

Bear's Lair is our escape

We had a great stay here. Donna at Best of Canaan was extremely helpful. We ran out of LP gas on day one and also had trouble with the coffee pot - I called and we had replacements 28 minutes later! I expected to wait quite some time, but they were "Johnny on the spot!" The home is aging, but very comfortable. Our bed was very nice, the pool table is in good working condition, and the hot tub was very relaxing. Fridge and microwave have been updated. Deer were in the yard daily. This place is soooo secluded. Overall an excellent experience.

Nice place, I've stayed here 3 times previous to this so am familiar with the property. It is showing some age; floors worn, etc. but is a good bargain overall for 10 people. Grass could have been mowed; this was not a big deal for us, good stay overall!

A great time

We rented this because the price was right. It was way more house than 4 people needed but we fully enjoyed it!! It was completely private, you felt like you were the only house in the woods!! It was just wonderful.

Secluded, Peaceful, Beautiful

We had a great time, it was simple to rent - the Best of Canaan was super sweet to work with. What information the rental agreement didn't provide they were able to answer before we even showed up. The house itself just needs a lil love and care, we fear in a few years it may not be there. There was quite a bit of rot on the outside from the weather and the flooring in the kitchen has seen better days. The house just wasn't meant for "commercial use" and it shows. The older hot tub was a welcomed treat. It as also not necessarily meant for smaller children - as the heating units in the bedrooms are quite old and hot to the touch. Overall it is a beautiful house, we will definitely stay again!

Wonderful escape from holiday craziness!

This home was the perfect getaway for our family. It's set on a totally private lot just a short walk from GORGEOUS walking trails. Snowboarding was right down the road and we found great restaurants in nearby Davis. The hot tub appeared new and we got to enjoy it in the snow! The home had everything you need, although my only recommendation would be to bring your own pillow.

We had a mouse visitor everyday in the kitchen and laundry room. But we liked the location and privacy of the home. We would rent it again.

Wonderful trip

We have been staying in this house for ten years now and absolutely love the layout. It has room for all and is big enough to gather as a group. The house definitely needs some tlc to address the peeling paint in areas and the general aging of things. But that does not take away from the overall experience of the entire place. Even needing the updates, the house was still very clean when we arrived and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It would be a good idea to include the info about the canoe in the rental papers or on the fridge in the house. Had we not been there before, we would never have found the canoe based on the info given by the rental and would have had to try every canoe there to see which one unlocked with the code given to us at the rental office. (The canoe is a faded red color in the second row of canoes if anyone is looking! Get the lock code from the rental office.)

We has enjoyed Bears Lair the past eleven years and have loads of pleasant memories. Our family's growth and the minimal attention to maintenance has us changing to another property for next year's gathering. We will miss its great location and the beautiful property surrounding Bears Lair.

Pretty Stay

Very pretty setting; could have been cleaner; looked like it wasn't vacuumed; the mattresses were very hard....But it was a really nice place, well decorated for the mountains and the stay was enjoyable.

Loved the house and yard! Visited as a group of 8 adults, plenty of space for everyone and lots to do. The house has a great layout and the yard was beautiful. It was a very relaxing place to spend the weekend, and everyone had a wonderful time. We plan to come back again.

Bears Lair vacation

We had a wonderful time in Canaan Valley! We hiked, visited local attractions & the kids caught fish on Dry Fork! They said it was the BEST vacation Ever! The bed on 2nd floor was broken & the slats kept falling out at night. House had lots of cobwebs, dead bugs & smelled pretty bad. Nothing a broom & fabreeze stick ups & spray couldn’t help. We loved the location but the house needs a good cleaning. We would stay again because the lot was great for running children!

Really nice home!

Really nice home.. Loved the fireplace and that there was plenty of wood. Liked the master bedroom was on first level. Didn't care for the pool room having a big step as I fell right after getting there and pretty much ruined the vacation for the week. Over all very nice place and in good condition very clean.

Second trip for Beats Lair

We had a great time on our annual two family trip to canaan over new years week. We love the layout of this house which is perfect for two families since there are two master suites in addition to two additional bedrooms for kids . Fireplace is terrific and plenty of wood was delivered. Old timberline is a great location and rhis property has the avantage of being secouded but at the front of the neighborhood without any hill driving required which is particularly great when it snows. The location makes it easy to get to skiing driving to go out for dinner, and walking down to the lake for hikes .We always get a lot of use out of the pool table and the hot tub . New couches this year were great. This is one of the nicest properties that allows dogs, which is a integral part of our family

Great location and layout

Great Vacation!

WE have been coming to Canaan West Va for about 20 years and have stayed at this house four times. This is by far one of the nicest homes we stay at. The property description is accurate regarding the location, layout and amenities. The property was clean and well maintained. The owner is so very nice and made our stay even better and the Donna at Best of Canaan was very nice and provided great customer service. I would recommend this property to a friend or relative matter of fact I already did We enjoyed hiking Dolly Sods, Blackwater Falls and so many of the other places. Also got some biking in. The Grandchildren loved Big Johns arcade and the state park watching the deer and just relaxing in the hot tub at the house. We enjoyed the new restaurant Wicked their food was really good and the service was super .

Vacation away from it all

After the kid puking in the car, and a tire going flat on the mountain up; we arrived at the realty company without further incident. The staff was wonderful and gave us brochures and recommendations of things to do around town. We didnt need to, but felt like we could call for anything. Regardless of how major or minor our question/problem would be. We arrived at the bears lair and were greeted by a family of deer. That set the scene for the rest of the vacation. We got away from the hustle and bustle of the city and escaped to this beautiful home. Two families, kids range from 10 to 10 months all had something to do and no one felt on top of each other. We really did not need to leave the community (minus a grocery run, and sight seeing). This house had the best lot in the community. A dry creek bed, a yard (with the best grass for kids to crawl), hot tub for the adults, and a game room away from the bedrooms, stars,a canoe down the road, etc. It was a much needed escape from society, a place to rejuvenate and spend time with the family. I know most people go for the skiing, but tje summertime is just as wonderful. The house is beautiful we loved the layout and all the large windows. Such a beautiful piece of property and home. We will definitely be back.

Bear's Lair is the Grrrreatest

We rented bears lair for five nights for our annual Canaan Valley New Year's week trip . We have been renting homes in that area including timberline for the past 10 years. We can honestly say this is the best one we have rented that is dog friendly. We had two families total of eight people and the set up is perfect to allow privacy for everyone but also lots of very nice communal space for playing games sitting in front of the massive stone fireplace or playing pool . The hot tub was perfectly functioning and clean. The yard is beautiful. We had warmer than usual weather for January but the kids had a great time playing in the creek that passes through the property and building forts in the woods. There's amazing hiking and biking trails right out the door including around the two lakes or up into the mountains on timberline roads . We look forward to returning to Bears layer on a more typical snowy week since skiing is literally right through the guard gate less than a mile away. We also love the fact that Bear's Lair is very accessible and does not require going uphill on the mountain roads which can be pretty treacherous in timberline when it's really snowy . Another added bonus of this home is there are two huge Master bedrooms which is great if you have two families since neither of the adults have to compromise.

Great House, Great Time!

My group and I had an amazing time at Bear's Lair just a few weeks ago! There were a few kinks (which I noted in the guest book at the house) but generally, we loved it! The layout of the house is very interesting and works well for a large group. The kitchen table and chairs were cozy and we were able to all fit around it to enjoy and break bread together. The ambiance of the whole resort area is very serene during their off season, it was perfect for us! It was great to have Blackwater Falls and the Shop and Save were great to have so close to where we were staying. A few recommendations would include:

- the owner should have notified me that there was no air conditioning. We only found out when we got there. I contacted the owner and she placed the blame on me of being confused, which was off-putting.
- the outside fire pit is placed under a few low-hanging branches and I would suggest to have them cut back.
- The back door was unlocked upon our arrival, and would not lock or unlock properly during our stay.

Other than those few kinks we really enjoyed our stay! Thank you!

Bear's Lair Review

We had a wonderful vacation! The location was beautiful and we really enjoyed staying there! The house is great (could have been a little more clean- entry way smelled like wet dog/ dead bugs in light fixtures) but not a big deal. Our only real complaint was that some of the vents were loose and had screws loose and broken outlets, which was a real safety cocern for us since we had 4 children under the age of 2.

Lovely home and great stay with a few critiques

This home is lovely and in a wonderful location. There are so many great things about staying here, you will not be disappointed. On the negative side, the house was not thoroughly cleaned. There was trash left in some places in and around the house, but we took care of that without much difficulty. The furniture was a little dated, which wasn't a huge deal but a slight negative. The plates and silverware were very mix and match, but I guess that's fine for vacation living. Our biggest concern was the 10am checkout time. We felt that was excessively early for checkout. We ended up booking an extra day so that we wouldn't have to leave first thing in the morning, but that certainly increased our cost beyond what we felt was a good value. On the positive side, this is a great house. Although dated, the furniture (including sofas and beds) was very comfortable. The towels seemed new and in great condition. The hot tub was fantastic. The pool table was great fun, and in a separate area. The TV was very good, so we could watch some sports during our get away. The fire pit was tons of fun, and there was plenty of fire wood available. The area is amazing, with plenty of hiking. We didn't use the canoes, but they were clearly easy to access. And the stars... just amazing to be out on a clear night. All in all, this is a great place, and I will give an overall four stars to my review. Hope this review helps you. Happy travels!
