We Loved Cooper's Homestead

by Tara H.
The homestead was wonderful we loved it so very much! My husband and I didn't want to leave. We have been staying in Canaan Valley for 28 years several times a year. Cooper's Homestead was comfortable, the beds were excellent, the couch and chair could use an upgrade if you are planning on relaxing as my husband and I did. We are extremely busy and this was the first time in years that we stayed in Wednesday-Sunday! The tub was was an experience and of course made me appreciate mine so much the more. The stairs were NOT a problem for us and any well-rounded person would see immediately that you should use caution. We take for granted what we are given each day... and how blessed we are in 2024 but for those of us in 2024 that wished we lived back in the day this is your house! It is an excellent reminder of back then with the conveniences of today.

Peace and Tranquility

by Kimberley P.
A lovely stay. Your closest neighbors are horses. The air is as sweet as cold spring water and then balanced with the scent of wildflowers from the meadow.
You're close to Davis and Thomas as well as Blackwater Falls State Park.
Thank you for the lovely review of Cooper Homestead! We hope to have you back soon!

Wonderful Cabin

by David N.
We loved the stay in this restored log cabin. Great setting and view, well stocked and up to date. The stairs are pretty steep, but no problem for us.

Cooper get-away

This historic house was clean and cozy. We enjoyed our stay. It was close to everything that we wanted to do. We did a lot of hiking at Dolly Sods.
Sitting on the porch swing or the top balcony with a cup of tea in the morning or evening was an absolute dream. If you want to get away and relax this is the place.
That does sound like a dream! Thanks for your feedback. We hope to have you back to Cooper Homestead soon!

Loved it!

This property is amazing. If you like solitude, if you enjoy being in nature, if you appreciate history and getting a taste of what it might have been like to live it, you’ll enjoy Cooper Homestead. The house is modern enough you won’t feel like you are Davey Crockett, but still maintains enough of its historical character to imagine you could be. The view and sounds from the front porch swing, where you’ll want to spend a lot of time at the house if the weather permits, are worth the stay alone. They gaze out onto empty grassland all the way to the mountains in the background, with only the hint of a roofline off in the distance, and the sounds of the birds and the breeze to greet you. You’ll feel almost as if you’re all alone in the valley. The house has everything you’ll ‘need’ but don’t expect luxury, it’s an 1800s log cabin after all. The interior original doors are crooked from the house settling, as one would expect, and some don’t latch properly, and the floor isn’t perfectly level and even, and the beds are comfortable enough but squeak when you get in. If you’re the type of traveler that’s picky about those kinds of things, then Cooper might not be for you. But if you’ll look at the crooked doors, and uneven floors, and marvel at how a log house this old could still be in such great condition, and see those ‘flaws’ as part of the history and character of the place, then Cooper will not disappoint. “This is so cool” was uttered many times throughout our stay as we noticed more and more of the house’s quirks and charms. If we return to the Canaan Valley in the future then Cooper is where we’ll want to stay.

I’ll echo other reviewers that the stairs are steep and narrow, as you would expect in a house of this era. We were able to get our suitcases up and down carefully, but I wouldn’t recomm

Pleasant, needed rest

by Roberta P.
This is our 4 stay at this property, we like how peaceful it is. My only negative comments are that when we arrived the cleaning crew had sprayed some kind of air freshener in the house and it was horribly strong, it took hours to fade with all windows and doors open. One of the reasons we rent from here is they typically did not have heavy scents in the property, we are both allergic to scents so both of us had sore throats for days from it. The other issue is a person showing up in the evening of the first day to mow the grass, it is very loud and one of the reasons we stay here is it is quiet. We come here to get away from the noise of the city only to have it follow us. It would be nice if that could be done before someone arrives.

Beautiful and private getaway

by Benjamin W.
We rented this lovely 1800s log cabin for the Presidents’ Day weekend. It borders a Nat’l Wildlife Refuge so it is private and has a lovely sunrise view. It’s not far off the road, but it is quiet. Close to skiing, hiking, and good food.
Thank you for your review of Cooper Homestead. We hope to have you back soon!

Cooper Homestead

by Philip M.
Overall experience met expectations. There were adverse events that would impact normal vacation goers who are less comfortable in certain living spaces: Dead mouse in upstairs bedroom, lots of ants in the kitchen, lots of house flies congregating along the windows, the water went out one night when it got very cold and the heaters in the craw space were not turned on, but was resolved the following afternoon, left behind articles from prior guests in the dresser. Its a very old home, so you expect to have pest issues. The trip was covered as a gift, but the cost per night is too high for the conditions mentioned above and I would not stay here for the price, if I were paying for it. Location and the management were great.

We didn't want our stay at Cooper Homestead to end!

This house is a true rustic beauty that has received a loving makeover that is careful not to overshadow the home's history and original features.

Picking up the keys was a breeze, and the property was easy to find. We arrived in the dark, with a cold wind blowing, and were delighted to find the gas fireplace burning and the house toasty-warm.

We stayed four days over Thanksgiving. The kitchen is fitted out with everything we needed to cook a full Thanksgiving dinner, and it was wonderful to eat with the family at the kitchen table, like generations before us.

The homestead was built by one of General Robert E. Lee's bodyguards after the Civil War, and it was exciting to experience this piece of history for ourselves. It snowed whilst we were there and the views out of the second-floor windows to the hills beyond was just magical. We took long walks across the property with our dogs, and enjoyed reading in the living room and playing the games provided.

A couple of things to note – first off, this is NOT a luxury stay. The house is truly rustic, with rough edges, uneven floors and even areas of the walls where old newspaper is still plugging cracks! If you are up for a real piece of history and a special location, this is for you.

Secondly, be aware that one bed is a large double, the other is the size of a king single – fine for two smaller kids, but our tweens found it a bit of a squeeze. And I’d recommend taking your own pillows as those provided are in need of an upgrade.

Third, the stairs are quite steep and narrow. If you are elderly or have any mobility limitations, you might find them difficult.

I hope I’ve managed to convey that Cooper Homestead is a really special place. To think it was almost knocked down to make way for a subdivision, before it was saved and renewed! We’re thankful to the owners for sharing it so that we had the chance to experien

GREAT VACATION

by Jeffrey M.
We enjoyed our stay at the Cooper Homestead. The peace and quiet was refreshing. The easy access to so many landmarks was enjoyable. We had an issue with a stuck door key, and Mike came within a few minutes and had it fixed in a short time. Would like to see the weeds around the cabin trimmed up and the grill was a mess and did not burn properly, but not big issues for us. The view across the National Wildlife refuge is great. We spent most of our time on the porches watching the wildlife.
Hi Jeffrey, Thank you for your review of Cooper Homestead! The info on the grill and the weeds help a lot and we will make sure that gets taken care of right away. We hope to have you back again soon!

This Old Cabin

by Mary M.
I know it is old but it could really needs a good cleaning. Maybe a new couch. The steps to the upstairs are very steep, something that should be mentioned when reviewing the home. An older person or dog may have a hard time getting upstairs and the railing was loose on the top. Kitchen, very nice, bathroom and washroom was clean. In a beautiful spot.

Spend time in a old log home from long ago

We have spent a few vacations in old log homes. They have a charm of their own. We enjoyed this one very much. Very clean and had everything you would need.

Great cabin for a relaxed getaway

by Robb H.
A vintage log cabin with modern amenities. Claw foot tub, good for soaking, the kitchen is well kitted out, and the gas "wood" stove keep the cabin toasty. The beds are a little long in the tooth and not firm at all. But overall a great place for a quiet retreat.
So glad you enjoyed your stay at Cooper Homestead. It really is a special place!

Beautiful property with a historical feel

by Ashley S.
My family and I loved to staying at the Cooper Homestead. The cabin is thoughtfully furnished with antiques, and it’s a perfect distance from the main road to feel isolated yet close enough to Davis. Despite its age, the cabin was warm and cozy for the winter holidays. Our only disappointment was the overall cleanliness. High touch surfaces were spotless, but light fixtures and corners were full of dust and cobwebs. I have young children, so I had to vacuum the main rug because it was covered in dog hair. But I’m the end, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and we would recommend the property.
Hi Ashley, Thank you for review on Cooper Homestead. We so apologize for the cleanliness issue. That is not how we expect things to be done here and we will certainly work on getting that resolved. We trust you had a great stay otherwise and we hope to have you back soon!

A special getaway!

We came to Cooper Homestead for a two-week escape from the city and we are so glad we did. It was such a unique, charming cabin! Staying here really felt like stepping back into time in the best possible way. We were pleasantly surprised with the amenities, especially in the kitchen, it had nicer/more extensive cookware than ours back home. Location is great, as you are close to town for the necessities but remote enough for true peace and quiet. Incredible views of the mountains from the property; we loved sunrise walks in particular. Lots of amazing hiking trails nearby. Check-in was very easy at the Best of Canaan office.

A few things for future guests to be aware of: 1. As other reviews have mentioned, the stairs are very steep and narrow. Not recommended if you have mobility issues. 2.The bedrooms are shotgun style (i.e., you have to walk through one to get to the other) and the walls/doors are thin. Not recommended if you want complete privacy from the other bedroom. 3. There is satellite wifi, but it is a very old router. It works fine for checking email, but not suitable for streaming or video calls.
Overall, a really special place to enjoy nature and a slower pace of life! We would love to return.

A wonderful experience

My husband booked the Cooper homestead as a gift to me and my mother. My great-great grandfather, Henry Jackson Cooper, built the cabin and our family lived on the homestead for generations. It looked a lot different when she visited as a girl! The renovation is beautiful and the well-appointed accommodations were comfortable and perfect for our family. Our two little boys had a blast, and their grandmother had a magical experience, with three generations of Coopers spending time at the family homestead. We were even able to harvest a few apples from the trees our family had planted! We had a great experience with Best of Canaan, and definitely recommend this cabin as a jumping off point for adventure, or just to sit and enjoy the weather and scenery from the porches.
Thank you Chris for your great review of Cooper Homestead. We love your story and so glad your mother got to reminisce in childhood memories. We would love to have you back anytime!

Lovely little house with a lot of atmosphere! Has been restored carefully and with attention to maintaining the historic feel of the place. The 3 of us plus dog loved it. Also in ideal location to go skiing or hiking.

What a pleasant experience!

by Ralph W.
It had all the atmosphere of country homestead with all the amenities of a modern cottage. The accessories were top rate: cookware linens, beds, etc. One causation: only the "shore footed" should attempt the bathtub and the narrow, steep staircase.
Thank you for your review of Cooper Homestead! It is such a unique little house and we are so glad you enjoyed it. Can't wait to have you back!

Cooper Homestead

by Linda B.
The Old Log House was absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching the deer eat the apples couldn't help it gather some and fry them. House had everything we needed. Love the long relaxing bath in the old clawfoot tub, but that being said was difficult to get in and out as I am nearing seventy. Luckily we are in pretty good shape for our age. Tub and narrow stairs might not be suitable for elderly with minor disabilities oro issues. The fireplace made it so cozy. Walking around on the property was absolutely gorgeous the long driveway in made for excellent walk. The old barn was gorgeous from the outside as well as the beautiful horses. We did as instructed and did not enter the barn in or go near the horses. Overall wonderful stay would absolutely rent again. Although enjoy the wonderful view from all the large windows, would love to have had some blinds at night which would have just made us feel a little more comfortable. Property was clean and well-maintained. Took advantage of all the area parks and towns and local artists. Great vacation may come that way again next year, if so would definitely rent Cooper Homestead again love the history of the place as well

Absolutely wonderful place for an early fall vacation

by E Jane O.
We loved the Cooper Homestead setting, structure, amenities, property and close by activities for nature enthusiasts / birders. We were struck by how serene and peaceful it was and loved sitting on both of the wonderful verandahs for coffee/tea, meals and just reading and relaxing. The week in the Canaan Valley was one of the best vacations and vacation rentals that we have ever experienced.

We spent the Thanksgiving holiday at the homestead and it was wonderful. Lovely place restored appropriately and very clean. I cooked Thanksgiving dinner and had everything I needed at my fingertips to prepare a lovely meal. Located conveniently to check in, the town of Davis and Blackwater Falls State Park. "Little House in the Valley"

by Jennifer P.
We checked in with no problems and received clear directions to our getaway cabin. It was snuggled quietly on "protected wilderness property" and had gorgeous views of the mountains. It had all the amenities that we needed - we never turned on the tv. Spent lovely nights on the porch watching falling starts and mornings sipping coffee overlooking the horse pasture, watching the hummingbirds, rabbits and chipmunks. A perfect, quiet retreat for reading and reconnecting with the Maker of the Universe!

Great Porches!

by Nancy M.
This is a very unique and nicely renovated old farmhouse. The two porches get the sun in the morning and are cool in the evening. The lower one has a nice swing, while the top porch has a great view of fireflies in the evenings. You could also see some fireworks for the fourth of July in the distance. It was a nice place to explore this area from!
