A lovely recharge

This was our longest stay ever in Canaan Valley -- 23 days. Wald Haus was a perfect place to spend that time hiking, reading, entertaining out-of-state guests, and watching sunsets. Out 3-year-old labradoodle also enjoyed the visit.
We especially loved the deck and house sitting room -- views of trees and deer.
The house was very accommodating. As vegetarians, it can be challenging finding restaurants... but Milo's in Davis offered a delicious option.

Love the area
I could tell the house was clean but it was very smelly (most likely due to sitting empty with no air flow) and the carpets were pretty stained. I think the carpets needed a shampoo which might also help with the smell. The plumbing sounds like it has some serious issues, when flushing a toilet or showering you hear very loud humming and an almost fog horn like noise. It was so loud it would wake me and my dog up. There was also only handsoap in the half bath and nowhere else in the home. The yard hadn't been cut the first day we were there, the grass was above my lab's head but luckily the next day it was taken care of. Otherwise we liked the neighborhood, it was quiet and my dog enjoyed walking by the lake. We love the Canaan Valley area and found the location convenient. If this home was maintained better I would stay here again but at the price I think there are nicer places I have stayed in the area.

One of our yearly stay’s in Old Timberline

May 20-25-2024. One of our yearly visits to the valley staying in Old Timberline was nice and enjoyable with the family and granddaughter. The fishing was great in the Trout Pond and Spruce Island Lake. Enjoyed the house and all the decorative decor. The weather was perfect, only rained on Friday a little while, we didn’t even have to wear a coat or jacket. We love Best of Canaan for our rental company, they are the best.. We are looking forward to the next trip in the valley this fall..

The cabin itself is nice. I was a bit taken back by the fees from the best of cannaan. The cabin rents for $175 a night on VIBO but it ends up being $300 a night with all their fees. a bit much I thought.

Ski/adventure retreat

My husband and I stayed here for a week with our two Britney Spaniels. The house and location was great. My husband and I loved the extra family room off the master bedroom. Such beautiful views!! The back deck is huge and enclosed which was perfect for the dogs to play. We will definitely rent again!

Perfect Getaway

Very nice comfortable home. Loved the master bedroom suite with its own private living room. Views are spectacular. The layout of the two upper bedroom with loft is very nice giving everyone some privacy.
The kitchen lacked storage space for personal items. Recommend you bring a large tight closing storage bin for personal food items unless you want to share them with Mickey Mouse and his family. There is a large mud room next to kitchen which was a lifesaver for personal kitchen item storage and in keeping house clean from tracking mud and leaves inside.

Another great stay at a cabin in West Virginia.

The cabin was beautiful with the decor so fascinating. Brought home a lot of pictures so others could see how picturesque it was. If we had no doctor's appointments, we would have stayed as long as possible. I would encourage others to stay at least a week or more. We were truly rested when we returned was better then described so we enjoyed the wildlife and did not leave it until the day we came home and enjoyed every day. We would reccomend it to everyone who likes the quiet life.

Wonderfully Secluded

We really enjoyed the house and all the space it provided. It is relatively close to everything we wanted to do with our children. Our dog came along too and the side entry washroom was a perfect spot to keep his crate at night and while we went canoeing. There was a wonderful variety of DVDs and games and the well-equipped kitchen afforded us the ability to prepare most of our meals. The large windows helped us appreciate all the beauty and peacefulness of outdoors. The running stream along the side of the property was a natural sound machine.

Great location
Our family of four (with two teens) recently stayed at Wald Haus. The location was fantastic, especially if you are interested in spending time in Dolly Sods, as there is an entrance that only those staying in the gated community that Wald Haus is a part of can use. It was a spacious property with everything we needed, and although it is part of a large community, the house itself was in a very private wooded setting. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well-stocked although no goods such as ziplock bags/foil were provided, so if those are needed, bring your own. We also were only given 3 dishwasher tablets for an 8 night stay; if you plan on eating most meals there, you may want to bring some of your own. Those were minor quirks and did not detract from the enjoyment of the property.

Great property for a hiking vacation!

This house is nestled in the woods, just like we were hoping. The pictures don't do the property justice. The master suite is huge and consists of two rooms. The sitting room in the back is full of windows and makes you feel like you're tucked in the woods while sitting there. The main areas of the house were big enough for the five of us to be comfortable. And this was a good central location for the hikes we wanted to do. And the back deck is gated off so we were able to relax with our morning coffee while the dogs roamed around safely on the deck.
The furniture is a bit older, but in good shape and clean. And the kitchen is pretty well stocked although some of the baking pans need to be replaced.

Deer Hunting Trip

Wald Haus was everything we were looking for and more. The property is very clean,well furnished, and maintained.
All you have to bring is your clothes and your food. The beds are comfortable. The kitchen has all of the pots,pans, and dishes needed to prepare any kind of meal, but the knives need sharpened. This is a great place and I would definitely recommend it. My friends and I had a very satisfying stay at Wald Haus.

Perfect Fall Get-Away
We had a phenomenal time at Wald Haus. The neighborhood was safe and convenient to lots of great activities including ski slopes, golf course, restaurants, and hiking. There is even a trail into Dolly Sods in the neighborhood! We enjoyed watching wild turkeys in the yard from the comfort of the couch and cozy fireplace. We can’t wait to return and couldn’t recommend this house and rental agency more. Everything from check-in to check-out was smooth and easy. The COVID precautions and cleanliness of the space helped make for a relaxing and safe stay!

The rental was perfect. Spotless, comfortable and the way it was decorated made you feel at home. The Staff at Best of Canaan was very friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. Very nice getaway

The cabin was very cozy and had everything we needed to have a comfortable stay. It was well worth the cost. The beds were comfortable and there were books and movies available for use and many places to sit. I loved the large windows that looked out on all sides. It felt a bit like we were in a treehouse. The view from the deck was beautiful, but there was not a lot of comfortable seating out there, so we didn't sit out there long. Even though it wasn't air conditioned, it stayed pretty cool inside, after the initial heat dissipated from being closed up when we arrived. There were a good bit of gnats and flies that got in, but they mostly stayed around the windows and didn't bother us too much. Having the garage to store our bikes and golf clubs, etc, was super convenient. We enjoyed fishing in the lake and my husband and I both caught a pretty sizable fish, even though we are definitely not fisherman! It was very close to Canaan and Blackwater Falls and the the shops at Davis. I would definitely stay here again. I bet it would be beautiful in the fall.

I have been vacationing in Canaan for over 45 years and this trip was just what the Dr. ordered. Corona virus escape

Had a great time at the Wald House! It was super clean and came with everything we needed. We took our dog with us for the first time and I enjoyed the big deck with the gate! He could go out and I didn’t have to worry. The wildlife was fun to watch and they even provided bird food, which the squirrels loved. Close to everywhere we love to hike and the location was nice. Definitely will add to our list of places to stay again

Cozy Escape in the Woods
This is the place we always seek to rent whenever we come to Timberline. We've now stayed at Waldhaus about half a dozen times. We're drawn to its brightly lit living and family rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, cozy fireplace, well-stocked kitchen, and beautiful woodland view. The owners make sure the place feels like home to renters, and it does. That's why we keep coming back.

Thanksgiving In the Woods

It rained on us most of the time, bad timing on the part of the weather, but hey, it was November in the mountains of West Virginia. Yet, our stay was cozy, comfortable and warm. The view from the walls of windows was fabulous. We enjoyed watching deer and wild turkeys, as well as a "few" squirrels. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. A few items were needing repair, but we had our own supplies. The kitchen was more than adequate for preparing a traditional Thanksgiving turkey (18 pound) dinner for a small group. We couldn't use the garage as the door really didn't open but it wasn't possible to unload directly into the house from the garage. A small creek that flowed through the driveway made it challenging to keep our feet and our dogs' feet mud free (white carpet in the house). Otherwise, we had a fabulous time in Wald Haus.

Over all was good. Location and condition of the property was good. Coffee maker needs white vinegar treatment or replaced. All knives need sharpened. Steak knives need replaced. Clean and Spacious.
The house was clean, well equipped and spacious. 3 adults, 5 teenagers were very comfortable. It’s within 10 minutes to Canaan Valley Slopes, and 5 minutes to Timberline. It is in a safe and secure area as well. We will definitely stay here again in the future.

Perfect Family Escape

Our family rented this home for our 3 night Thanksgiving vacation in this area. We were a party of 7: 4 adults and 3 children. This was a VERY spacious place, with ample space for everyone both while we slept and when we spent out Thanksgiving there. There are 3 bedrooms, two gorgeous living rooms (with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the wilderness) and a large kitchen/dining room area. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor with a bathroom on that floor and a large hallway containing a sofa bed should that be needed. The main floor contains the master bedroom, with it's own bathroom as well as an additional bathroom (3 total in the whole place). The kitchen had everything you could possibly need to prepare all of your meals (as I said, we celebrated Thanksgiving and all pots, pans, etc... needed were available). There were ample towels, sheets and blankets and there is a washer and drier in the entry way. The driveway was plowed for us prior to our arrival and the setting was idyllic and we saw several deer, various birds and other wild life. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone exploring the area. The closest major store (Shop and Save in Davis) is a 15 min drive away. We checked in after 5pm, so needed to call in advance to make arrangements to get the key. We travel extensively and this was one of them most enjoyable accommodations I have stayed in. Our party was able to spread out when we needed to get out of each other's hair and sit together when it suited us. We were 3 generations (grandparents, parents and children) and it was perfect for everyone. When there was a dispute over what we would watch, we just went into the other living room and watched the other movie in there, so everyone was happy.

Well, since this is our fourth stay at Wald Haus this review has to be positive. Great setting, wonderfully supplied/furnished home, good value price. The only improvement I would suggest is to cut the grass in the back yard. Certainly not a deal breaker, though, since there is not much of a need for renters to be down there unless they have children who might want to play there.

Thanksgiving Getaway 2017

Our party consisted of 4 adults and a medium sized dog. We had very ample space and felt comfortable and at home in Wald Haus. We especially enjoyed the peaceful location, wooded views and passing deer, easy and nearby access to Dolly Sods and the Wild Life Sanctuary, as well as the very well maintained community trails, the log fire and the jigsaw puzzles. One of the Best on the Mountain
Well maintained rental with all the comforts of home. Tastefully decorated. Only suggestion is a larger TV screen in the main living room for those of us who enjoy our football games. Secluded location with nature at the doorstep. Relaxing atmosphere with a fantastic floor plan.

Wald Haus was exactly as we expected--especially in light of it being our 3rd week there in the last 3 years. We love the house and it is so easy to deal with Best of Canaan--they go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay.
Everything you could want is provided by the owners and the house is comfy and well furnished. We especially like the large back deck with a secure gate that allows our two Weims to wander out there with no worry of them running away into the interesting nearby woods.
OK, the main idea of this is that we really love vacationing here. Now let's have a few small (VERY SMALL!!) negatives that will make this review seem more realistic:
1. Door locks have been changed--that would not usually be a problem but it now means the realtor keys will only work on the front door--not the side "mud room" entrance way, the garage, or the back door.
2. Grass in back yard seems to never be mowed--this could be a problem if you have young children who you'd like to let play outside where you can watch them from the deck.
3. Well, I can't think of a 3rd.... Walk Haus is just that good!!!

Serenity at Waldhaus
This was our second stay here because we fell in love with Walhaus during our first stay last winter. Our second stay was equally wonderful. Just one quibble this time -- three key items were absent: trash bags, cleaning sponges for doing the dishes, and small handtowels for cleaning up around the kitchen. All three of those items were on hand last time, but not this time. But everything else about our second stay was wonderful.

Relaxation in the Woods

This was truly a retreat into the woods. Relaxing in either of the two "living rooms" was like sitting right in the woods but with great warmth and comfort. The home was beautifully furnished, well-equipped, and as comfortable as we could possibly hope. I LOVED the fact that not only were linens provided, but they were on the beds and in the bathrooms and ready to go!! Effortless! We hope to return in the future.

We can not say enough wonderful things about this home and Donna at Beat of Canaan!!!! This place was even more wonderful in person we take trips every fall looking for a place to purchase our own cabin and we think we have found our cabins home in Timberline, Davis WV. We plan to come back to the Wald Haus for the next few falls, as long as they will have us, and then look for our mountain get away. If you are looking for an open, cozy, and quiet retreat this is the cabin for you.

We liked Wald Haus so much last September that we decided to rent another week this summer.
Just about any thing you might want is there--lots of kitchen stuff, 2 LED TV's, 2 DVD & VHS combo players, books and videos, wifi, completely stocked kitchen, plenty of nice linens, lovely gated deck (great for our 2 Weimeraners), two "living rooms", spotlighted driveway, LOTS of cut firewood, a huge garage in case of storms, etc. It is very clean, furnished in great taste, and just feels like you're borrowing a friend's home for a week.
The only suggestion we can make is to have the back yard grass mowed. It was about 8" high both times we were there. Not a real problem for us (a retired couple), but if a family with children were to rent, it would provide them with a secure and fun play area when mowed. Of course, grass mowing in Timberline seems to be somewhat "Optional" for many of the units anyway.
All and all, it is a great house, a great vacation value, and we plan to return there again. It is our new favorite in Timberline.

All and all, it is a great house, a great vacation value, and we plan to return there again. It is our new favorite in Timberline.

Best place we've ever stayed!
The house was spacious and comfortable. It was immaculate and in perfect condition and readiness for us. Very well stocked--with plenty of kitchen tools, spices, cleaning equipment, towels, linens, firewood, etc. After having been in many rentals over the years and in many countries, this is the first house we would rent again. The owners clearly care about their home and keep it in great order and maintenance.

Clean, home in the woods

This was a clean, private house near Timberline. It was nice to stay with the dog. No fenced yard if you need that. It was pretty big and the windows onto the woods were just great! I picked up some firewood at the grocery store; try to remember to do that before you get there. It was great having a fire after walking at the parks during the day.
Unlike every other rental I've had from VRBO (around 15) there was no coffee, condiments, seed for the feeders or a light on anywhere when I came well after dark. I had notified the rental company I'd be late and they did give me good instructions and access to the keys from their office not too far away, though. It was no biggie, but those little touches make VRBO nicer than extended stay hotels.
I'd recommend this unit to others. It's worth the price they're charging relative to the area.

A GREAT place to stay in Timberline.

We've rented six or more Timberline homes in the past few years (love the development and it trails!), and I have to say Wald Haus (OK, what does that name mean?) was one of the best.
We somrtimes encounter malfunctioning appliances, less than desirable kitchen ware, poorly maintained property, etc. This is definitly not the case with Wald Haus. The owners left almost everything in place--and it is tastefully furnished. It feels like the owners just left and handed you the keys.
We loved sitting out on the deck with the beautiful fall foliage, walking our two Weimaraners on the safe Timberline roads and trails, deciding which of the two TV rooms to settle into each evening, and using the well-kept BBQ. Thanks, Col. and Mrs. Bernaidi, for allowing us into your nice home. We certainly hope to return next year!

Wonderful Wald haus

We have stayed in many homes on Old Timberline over the past 24 years.This was our first long weekend spent at Wald Haus. Since we travel with our furry companion, choices are limited. We prefer homes near the top with a view and in walking distance to the trails, however none were available to us. This home was very well suited for our group of 8 and we would definitely happily rent this home again upon return. The house set up is a bit strange with the master bedroom between the two living areas, but we managed that just fine. The living area with the hardwood floors on the corner is a delight! The TVs are new, which the younger crowd was delighted to see, so they are HDMI compatible, bring your chords to attach media. Wifi was off and on which is probably the case in all of the houses. We hiked a 8.8 mile trail from the top of Old Timberline, the longest day hike ever for us. It was wet, but gorgeous! Hiking trails for Dolly Sods are now available online. We fished in the lake, but not as much luck as usual. I saw some VERY LARGE fish, think river monster size, so perhaps it's being taken over by carp? This was also our first time renting from Best of Canaan.They were wonderful.
Thanks for taking time to tell us about your time at Wald Haus. It is a lovely setting and we are glad you enjoyed it. Please note that the WIFI should definitely have been on for your use. Although Internet speed here in the mountains is much slower than most folks are used to, it does work. Please don't ever hesitate to phone the office to report Internet problems. We will always do our best to help.

Great house, great location
we really enjoyed the Wald Haus. It was the right size for our 2 families- 4 adults and 4 children. The kitchen was outfitted for our breakfast/lunch/dinner preparing needs. The house was very clean. It was a very short 2 minute drive to Timberline Ski resort, which is why we were there. We did not have access to the garage, so we couldn't get to the firewood, but we didn't freeze because the house is equipped with baseboard heat.

This house was great! We have stayed at may houses in Canaan and this was one of our favorites--in fact we came home and booked this house again for spring break! We loved that they provided seeds and nuts to feed the squirrels. This house was extremely clean and well appointed. Being able to bring our dog is a plus! Can't wait to go back in a few months!

Skiing families from Ohio
Our stay was great in this home. The home furnishings are a little outdated, we were aware if that from the previous reviews. The home was clean and had plenty of space for 8 people(4 adults &4 kids). The kids enjoyed just playing outside around tin the home, it's beautiful. Thank you for allowing us to bring our labradoodle dog also, it was nice to see his smiling face when we returned from skiing. This home is not too far from Timberline. It is not within walking distance, but we drove back to eat lunch at the house, about 2 miles. And the rental office was very helpful with info!!

Highly Recommended
This is a great home and in an excellent location. It was very clean and in top shape. Having two living room areas allowed our family to enjoy a room for the adults and a room for the kids. It's a quiet and peaceful setting. Our dogs could roam on the large decking which was totally fenced in. The kitchen had everything one could ask for. The house is a little outdated but everything was exceptionally clean. The one living area with full glass walls created an atmosphere of being outside all the time. Our family loved it.I certainly would stay there again.

My wife and i stayed as a family with 2 young adult children and we all were amazed at how nice Wald Haus is. There was plenty of room, it was clean and well decorated. The wildlife was easy to spot, we fed 2 deer from the deck, they were in the yard below. The setting is very nice, trees provide nice privacy, the neighbors are not terribly close, that was great. We loved it!

Great House!
Our family (including our dog) had a wonderful stay at Wald Haus. It was in great shape although not super fancy. We loved the fire place and big windows. It had lots of games and puzzles. We really enjoyed the creek too. We would definitely stay there again.
We did have one minor maintenance issue but Best of Canaan was very responsive and the staff very professional.

Large, Cozy House

We all quite liked the Wald Haus. It had plenty of room, was very convenient to the ski resorts, and contained plenty of blankets, pots & pans, and everything else we could need in our stay. It wasn't particularly new or up-to-date but it was well kept-up and comfortable. The sleds in the garage and the wood-burning fireplace were very fun. I recommend it to anyone who wants a large comfortable place out in Canaan Valley. Although on a map it looks like it is kind of close to other houses, the property is really quite large and full of trees so it feels more like you are alone in a forest.

This house was so enjoyable. The large deck was beautiful. My favorite thing was to sit on the deck with a cup of coffee and wait for the deer to show up in the yard. At night, we turned on the deck light and there was a raccoon eating out of the bird feeder. He put on quite a show for us most nights. With 2 living rooms, everybody could spread out if they wanted to. And even though it was July, we had a few fires at night in the fireplace to take the chill off. The area is beautiful for mountain biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking. As usual, we really hated to leave at the end of the week.

AWESOME!!!!

The propery was NOT as described--it was so much MORE!! The family & our dogs loved it!! Such a relaxing place inside & on the deck, with the gate on the deck we were able to let the dogs run free. No one had to wait on the bathroom, or had to share a TV. BEST of CANAAN was such a awesome group to deal from the time we were making reservations until after we were home. Had to leave early due to my dog getting a pinched nerve--I thought it was something worse and feared the worse--The staff followed up on my dogs condition and was so prompt in sending something I forgot. The ONLY thing that could be added to WALD HAUS is a hot tub--which we knew from the start they didn't have. Stayed in several rentals & dealt with different Realties this Rental & Best of Canaan has been the best all around. The view--pure nature--was what I wanted & needed. Will be working with BEST OF CANAAN for vacation next year.

The only way this trip could have been better was if we could have had a few more days. Everything was wonderful, from the beautiful home inside to the beautiful outside. the home was stocked with even bird seed and food for the squirrels. Wald Haus is a perfect place for friends to getaway
This house is really great and I would definitely recommend it to other renters. The check in and check out process was easy. I came with 8 adults and there was plenty of space. Its about a 2 minute drive to Timberline Ski and a 5 minute drive to Canaan Valley Ski. The fireplace was great after the slopes and the house was stocked with enough firewood to last for days. The driveway is a bit steep and the roads can be icy, so they are serious about the 4 wheel drive requirement, but I found from experience that if there are members of your group driving separately with no 4 wheel drive, there is a parking lot by the main gate (but they will have to be picked up and driven to the actual house).
The only thing that I did not like about this house was the decor, but I suppose that is just personal preference.

We just got back from a week at Wald Haus. It's a beautiful, private property on a heavily treed hillside. Convenient to Canaan Valley SP or Refuge (10 min), Davis, Thomas, Blackwater Falls SP (25 min), Dolly Sods (40 min) and more. Everything was essentially as described, except we initially had no internet service (resolved quickly after mentioning it to the folks in the office). Home is clean and comfortable. Looking forward to returning in the winter.

Great Fall Vacation

Great central location for visiting area sites. Our dogs loved watching the deer and turkey from the floor-to-ceiling windows as well as the deck. I only wish we could have let them run around, but the long hikes during the day wore them out well enough.

Best kept secret for Summer

We had a group of eight friends staying at the Wald Haus and had an amazing time! We trailered our bikes there to ride WV roads and due to the location we couldn't get the trailer down the driveway - but it was no problem. The guards were happy to let us place the trailer at the gate; can't ask for better security than that. Donna and her team are beyond professional and accommodating - they helped with check-in and check-out to the needs of our schedule and are more like friends than just property managers. The house itself was spacious, secluded and calm - perfect getaway for up to 8 people. We will definitely come back every Summer!

We really enjoyed our stay and felt like the rental for the week was a great deal. The property is situated in the woods, which we really enjoyed. It did not have a mountain view, but we have found in the past that a high elevation meant a long drive every time you leave and come back to the property. We found this location perfect for us.
Since we arrived in the evening and left early, we never personally met the property management company. It did feel a little odd using the convenience store next door for key drop off and pick up.
